The Homestudy Process

No matter what type of adoption you choose to pursue, every adoptive family must have a homestudy done as part of the adoption process. The homestudy is required by law whether you plan to adopt domestically, internationally, privately, through an agency or as a foster/adoption through the state.

Homestudies must be performed by an adoption agency licensed to perform homestudies in the county in which you live. African Cradle, Inc. is licensed by the state of California to provide U.S. domestic and intercountry homestudy services for families living throughout California.

What is a Homestudy?

A homestudy is a three-part process:

  1. Educate and prepare you for adoption
  2. Obtain information about you
  3. Evaluate your ability to parent a child

The completed homestudy is a written report prepared by a social worker who has met and interviewed the family on several different occasions. These meetings will happen both in the office and in the family's home. If there are additional adults living in the home, they will be interviewed as well.

In addition to the agency's social worker's report, a homestudy also includes medical repports, verification of financial standing, fingerprinting, background checks and references.

Why African Cradle?

African Cradle has been providing homestudies for over 11 years. We are a SAFE certified homestudy agency. We can help you prepare for your adoption through pre-adoption counseling, education and support. Whereas we're happy to provide a homestudy for any family planning to adopt, our focus has always been on families adopting children of color.

African Cradle is a leader in transracial education and support and specializes in families adopting across racial lines. We will properly prepare you for life as a transracial family, educating and counseling you on how to handle situations that you and your child will encounter, both at home in out in the world.
